Question:

140 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Energy the total number of Christmas trees imported into this country over the festive season; their country of origin and value; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 139 and 140 together. The information requested is not available in the detail sought. However, a rough estimate of the trade suggests negligible exports, and imports of about 30-40,000 trees last year, valued at about £300,000.

The home market for Christmas trees is buoyant and expected to expand. There are also opportunities for export markets notably in the UK. The supply of suitable home grown trees is limited but increasing, as both Coillte Teo, the main supplier, and the private sector take advantage of the available opportunities.
