Vol. 404 No. 9

Written Answers. - Iraqis and Palestinians in Ireland.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

152 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Justice the number of Iraqi and Palestinian citizens in Ireland at the present time; when their current visas expire; whether he intends to renew them during the term of the current conflict in the Gulf; the criteria he will use for individual decisions of this nature; if he will outline his views concerning the recent radio broadcasts from Iraq urging individuals to carry out attacks on installations in countries assisting the allied troops; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that there are approximately 300 Iraqi nationals and approximately 60 Palestinians currently resident in the State.

I set out very fully my general criteria for foreign nationals resident here, during the Gulf debate, official report, 18 January 1991, cols 713-715.

As regards the question of terrorists attacks, I can assure the House that the Garda are monitoring the security situation and are in close contact with their community counterparts.
