Vol. 404 No. 9

Written Answers. - National Drugs Advisory Board.

Bernard Allen

Question:

190 Mr. Alien asked the Minister for Health if he will make a statement on recent reports that the National Drugs Advisory Board is likely to be given powers to license human medicines under a wide ranging review of its operations being undertaken by his Department.

I am aware of recent reports regarding the reorganisation of the National Drugs Advisory Board.

A review of the organisation, role and structure of the National Drugs Advisory Board is currently being carried out by my Department in the light of a report from management consultants on the re-organisation of the board and of proposals by the European Commission to establish a central European agency for the evaluation of medicinal products.

Pending completion of the review, no definitive decisions have been made on the future role or structure of the board.
