Vol. 404 No. 9

Written Answers. - Special Schooling.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

201 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for Education if she has received a report on the special school requirements of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 12; if this person will be admitted into a special school without further delay as his educational needs cannot be satisfied by the school he attends at present.

Before a child can be accepted for enrolment in a special school a psychological assessment must be carried out to establish his/her educational needs. When this has been done, the assessing agency refers the child to the appropriate category of school for enrolment.

In the case of the child in question, it is understood that the clinic which carried out the assessment is in the process of arranging a referral to a specific school. The matter will be considered by the school authority when all the relevant documentation comes to hand.

I am not aware of any undue delay in this case.
