Vol. 404 No. 9

Written Answers. - County Limerick Community College Proposal.

Michael Finucane

Question:

203 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for Education the current position on the provision of a community school in Rathkeale, County Limerick; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

A decision was taken some time ago with the agreement of the existing school managements, to approve the establishment of a community school in Rathkeale amalgamating the two post-primary schools — the vocational schools and the Mercy secondary school. The architectural planning of a building project for the new community school has been proceeding within my Department.

Last November my Department was informed by the religious that because of changed circumstances, they were withdrawing their assent to the community school development.

A new proposal has now been submitted to my Department by the two school managements to the effect that the two post-primary schools in Rathkeale school be replaced by a community college under the aegis of County Limerick VEC.

I hope to respond shortly to this proposal.
