Paul McGrath

Question:

225 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education the number of special schools for (1) mildly mentally handicapped children and (2) moderately mentally handicapped children in the country; and in each case (a) the location of each, (b) the number of classes in each, (c) the number of teachers in each, (d) the number of child-care workers funded by her Department in each and (e) the number of ancillary staff in each school.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 224 and 225 together.

The information requested by the Deputy is being compiled in my Department. I will forward the information indicating the number of special schools for children with mild and moderate mental handicap and, in respect of each category, the name and location of each school, the number of classes, the number of teachers and the number of child care assistants funded by my Department in each.
My Department does not have information in relation to the employment of ancillary staff. This is a matter for the school authorities concerned in each case within their overall budget allocation.
