Vol. 404 No. 9

Written Answers. - Dalkey (Dublin) School Class Sizes.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

226 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education if she has any plans to reduce class sizes at Loreto primary school, Dalkey, County Dublin, having regard to the fact that this school has five classes of 35 or more.

Under existing arrangements negotiated under the auspices of the Central Review Committee of the Programme for National Recovery, school authorities, in particular the principal teacher, is responsible for arranging the organisation of the school so as to ensure that no class group exceeds the following guidelines set down by my Department: 39 (in the case of a single-grade class-group); 38 (in the case of a class-group with two consecutive grades); 35 (in the case of a multi-grade class-group).

None of the classes in Loreto Convent national school exceed the guidelines on maximum class sizes, as stated above.

The question of allocating additional remedial teachers to serve the needs of disadvantaged pupils will arise under arrangements recently agreed as part of the Programme for Economic and Social Progress.

The needs of Loreto primary school, Dalkey, will be considered when decisions in the matter are being taken in due course.
