Vol. 404 No. 9

Written Answers. - Pupil-Teacher Ratios.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

230 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education if she will outline the exact meaning of a recruitment ratio of 19:1 as outlined in the Programme for Economic and Social Progress.

Under the Programme for Economic and Social Progress all second-level schools will enjoy a pupil-teacher ratio of 19:1 by the beginning of the 1992-93 school year. This will mean that, if additional teachers are warranted in a school by reference to the new pupil-teacher ratio, such teachers may be appointed.

Under the present regulations a school's quota of teachers is determined by reference to a pupil-teacher ratio of 20:1.
