Vol. 404 No. 9

Written Answers. - Roscommon Tourism Earnings.

John Connor

Question:

245 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if he will outline the percentage share of national tourism earnings which accrued to County Roscommon for each of the years between 1987 and 1990.

I understand from the Central Statistics Office (CSO), who are responsible for compiling official statistics on overseas tourist numbers and earnings in Ireland, that such statistics are compiled on a national basis only. However, using this data and data from their own surveys, Bord Fáilte prepare estimates of tourist numbers and revenue on a regional, but not on a county basis.

County Roscommon is part of the western region for this purpose and the latest available estimates, which relate to 1989, show that tourism earnings in the region amounted to £195 million, or 18 per cent of total national tourism revenue. Directly comparable data is not available in respect of the years 1987 and 1988 when Roscommon was part of the midlands region.

Final revenue figures for 1990 for the western region will not be available until later this year.
