Vol. 404 No. 9

Written Answers. - Upgrading of Waterford RTC.

Austin Deasy

Question:

56 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Education if she will upgrade the regional technical college in Waterford to the status of university; and if she will provide sufficient funds for such upgrading with particular reference to the provisions of additional land and infrastructure.

I am satisfied that existing institutional structures in the Waterford area represent an excellent response to the demands of the area for higher education services.

The regional technical college in Waterford is the largest in the country and provides a broad range of courses, including five at degree level.

The Deputy will be aware that the most recent Clancy report "Who Goes to College"— 1988 indicates that rates of admission to higher education colleges, universities and RTCs, from County Waterford is significantly above average and ahead of, for instance, Limerick and Cork.
