Vol. 405 No. 1

Written Answers. - Road Haulage Licence Application.

Frank Crowley

Question:

101 Mr. Crowley asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications whether a decision has been made regarding an application for a road haulage licence for a person (details supplied) in County Cork.

An applicant for a road freight carrier's licence must satisfy the requirements of good repute, appropriate financial standing and professional competence. The professional competence requirement is satisfied either by the applicant holding a certificate of competence or by employing the holder of such a certificate to manage his or her business.

The person referred to by the Deputy has not applied to my Department for a road freight carrier's licence. He has, however, been in correspondence with my Department in relation to a certificate of competence. On the basis of the evidence submitted, he would not qualify for a certificate.

He can, however, qualify for a certificate of competence if, having taken the relevant course, he is successful in the written examination for such a certificate. Examinations are held twice yearly, under the auspices of the Chartered Institute of Transport in Ireland, at various centres throughout the country.
