Vol. 405 No. 2

Written Answers. - American Indians.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

33 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs whether he has raised or intends to raise with the United Nations, the matter of the Navajo and Hopi Indians who are being threatened with removal from their ancestral lands due to a United States Federal ruling on the forced movement of up to 10,000 Navajo Indians off their land, resulting in its opening up to mining on a massive scale; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that the question of the Navajo and Hopi Indians has been raised in the UN Sub-Commission on Elimination of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities, and that the sub-commission at its session in August 1990 noted progress towards settling the dispute between the two tribes. I also understand that the report of the sub-commission to the UN Commission on Human Rights is not yet available. I do not see that any useful purpose would be served by Ireland's trying to raise the matter at the UN. Ireland is not currently represented in either the UN Commission for Human Rights or the sub-commission.
