Vol. 405 No. 2

Written Answers. - Emigrant Statistics.

Jim Higgins

Question:

37 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the number of Irish born people living overseas and their known country of abode; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the Deputy is aware, the Central Statistics Office publishes figures relating to net migration. However, it would not be possible to derive from these an accurate figure of the number of Irish born people living abroad at any given time.

Since there is no requirement on Irish citizens to register at Irish diplomatic missions or consular offices abroad, the Government do not have comprehensive data on the number of Irish born citizens living in particular countries.
