Vol. 406 No. 4

Written Answers. - Post-Primary Schools.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

83 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the introduction of a six-year cycle for post-primary schools, she is prepared to allow for the increase in pupil numbers in the design plans for new school buildings so that adequate space is provided in all new buildings for the extra student numbers.

The introduction of a six-year cycle for post-primary schools is one of a number of factors, which include demographic trends, housing provision, primary and post-primary school enrolments, that must be taken into account in the planning and design of new or improved school accommodation. It is only after consideration of all these factors that my Department can project short, medium and long term enrolments for schools and consequently plan how best to accommodate the pupils in question.
