Vol. 406 No. 4

Written Answers. - Civics Classes.

Michael Creed

Question:

81 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education if she will consider a review of the second level school curriculum with a view to protecting the status of civics classes for all pupils for the entire duration of their second level education.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

139 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education if she intends to introduce, as a subject for examination, a meaningful civics course in second level schools; if such a subject will include topics like (1) the Constitution (2) citizens' rights (3) political systems and (4) central and local government; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 81 and 139 together.

Civic education is an important element of the newly introduced junior certificate programme, infusing all subjects, most notably history, geography, business studies and home economics. Civic education must incorporate not only knowledge but also attitudes, skills and understanding of political and social life.

The NCCA are preparing a civics syllabus for the first year of post-primary education. This syllabus is scheduled for early completion and implementation in schools.
