Vol. 406 No. 4

Written Answers. - Continental Languages.

Michael Creed

Question:

78 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education the number of second level schools which offer two modern continental languages to their pupils; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

For the school year 1988-89 the number of post-primary schools providing instruction in at least two modern languages was 364, which represents an increase of more than 65 per cent over the position in 1985-86. I believe these figures reflect both the importance which I have attached to meeting the demand for the provision of modern languages in our schools and the resources which I have made available to meet that demand. Given the particular importance surrounding the provision of modern languages in the context of European integration and the approach of 1992, I am, of course, committed to the continuing and improved provision of resources for these subjects. I am confident that, when data regarding modern languages are available for the school years subsequent to 1988-89, they will show a further improvement in the already favourable situation.
