233 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Education the reason for the refusal to appoint a full time secretary and caretaker to a secondary school (details supplied) in County Mayo which has 514 pupils.
There is no scheme of grants under my Department for the employment of caretakers in secondary schools.
The clerk-typist post in this school fell vacant in 1985, but because of the then Government embargo on the filling of such posts, it was not possible to sanction a replacement.
The Programme for Economic and Social Progress contains proposals to expand the provision of caretaking and clerical services to second level schools of 200 pupils upwards, on a phased basis, commencing in 1992. The position with regard to the school in question will be considered when the allocations are being made for 1992.
