Vol. 407 No. 3

Written Answers. - Genetic Counsellors.

Bernard Allen

Question:

200 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health the number of genetic counsellors appointed by his Department; and if he will give a breakdown on the number employed in each of the health board areas.

There are no whole-time appointments of genetic counsellors in the health board areas. At the present time, genetic counselling is largely provided in paediatric hospitals and paediatric units and obstetric hospitals and units. In addition, genetic screening and testing facilities are available in the major university hospitals.

I have received a report on the future organisation and development of medical genetics services and I am having the matter actively considered in my Department at present.
