Vol. 407 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Libraries Funding.

Bernard Allen

Question:

207 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Education if she proposes to introduce a post primary library service in order to meet the requirements of the new curriculum.

Grants specifically for stocking school libraries are not made by my Department but the costs involved can be met from the grants for general running expenses of the school.

In each of the school-years 1989-90 and 1990-91 a total of £1,000,000 was made available as special additional resource grants for post-primary schools for the new junior certificate programme.

In addition my Department operates a grant scheme at both primary and post-primary levels to provide school books for necessitous children.
