Question:

227 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Defence the plans his Department has to arrange for financial assistance to the ONE from his Department or the national lottery to provide for a new headquarters and house for retired homeless national ex-service men; if he will arrange with the Minister for the Environment that ONE be grant aided from the £1 million allocated to local authorities for the homeless problem and which was not taken up; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There are no funds at my Department's disposal from which the type of assistance referred to in the question could be provided. However, I would be pleased to support any application which the Organisation of National Ex-Servicemen and Women may make for such assistance.

I should mention that members and former members of the Defence Forces have the same right to be provided with housing by local authorities as other members of the community.
