Vol. 407 No. 3

Written Answers. - Award of Medals.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

228 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Defence the reason medals or other recognition has not been granted to the family of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 7 who served in the Irish Citizens Army in 1916; the different categories of medals which were issued to men and women who served in 1916 and in the rest of the War of Independence; if he will indicate whether in this case the application is being considered; if so, when a decision will be made; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The medals awarded in relation to the periods in question are the 1916 Medal, the Service (1917-1921) Medal with Bar and the Service (1917-1921) Medal without Bar.

An application for the posthumous award of the 1916 Medal in the case mentioned was made in 1986. However, as it was not possible to establish that the person concerned rendered active service during Easter Week 1916, the application was refused. Further action is not possible in the case. If some further information is available which would confirm that the person mentioned rendered active service I will re-examine the matter.
