Vol. 407 No. 3

Written Answers. - German Unification.

Bernard Allen

Question:

43 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will outline the discussions with Chancellor Kohl on the impact that the reunification of Germany, and the resultant increase in agricultural production within the EC, will have on Irish agriculture.

I have not had the opportunity to discuss with Chancellor Kohl the agricultural implications of German unification. However, the implications of the addition of the five new Lander for Community agriculture have been and indeed continue to be considered by Agriculture Ministers. The matter has arisen in the present farm prices discussions and along with several other Community Agriculture Ministers, I am pressing to have special arrangements made to take account of the additional cost for the Community's farm budget of German unification. In regard to the more general issue of the reorientation of the CAP I have arranged for a series of bilateral contacts with our Community partners to bring home to them the major concerns which arise for Ireland.
