Vol. 407 No. 3

Written Answers. - Disadvantaged Areas Scheme.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

46 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if the areas that will not qualify to be included in the extension of the disadvantaged areas scheme will be informed under which of the five eligibility headings they did not qualify; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In accordance with the agreed Programme for Government, the appeals body set up by me recently will have as one of their functions the task of considering why certain areas have not been included in the disadvantaged areas or have not been reclassified to a more favourable status following the 1989 survey and submission of our case for extension and reclassification to the Ec. In the case of appeal, this body will, of course, have to consider whether or not an exclusion from extension or reclassification was justified. In that context I would have no objection to disclosure of the specific criteria under which any area was not designated as disadvantaged or reclassified.
