Vol. 407 No. 7

Written Answers. - IDA Employees.

Michael Moynihan

Question:

63 Mr. Moynihan asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will indicate in respect of IDA employees: (1) the number of employees overseas, (2) the number of employees in the Republic of Ireland, (3) the total administration cost for the years 1990 and 1991, (4) the amount of grant aid paid out towards the creation of new jobs in the years 1990 and 1991, (5) the total number of jobs created in 1990 and 1991, and (6) the average cost to the Exchequer of each job created in the year 1990 and 1991.

The IDA at present employ a total of 556 people of whom 497 are employed in Ireland and 59 overseas.

The 1991 Book of Estimates gives details of the 1990 provisional outturn and 1991 estimates for IDA's total administration and general expenses. The 1990 provisional outturn was £28.975 million (£15.6 million grant-in-aid (Subhead I.1) and £13.375 million own resources). The estimate for 1991 is £29.610 million (£16.7 million grant-in-aid (Subhead I.1) and £12.910 million own resources).

In the 1991 Book of Estimates, the provisional outturn figure for IDA grants to industry in 1990 is £120.080 million. The estimate for 1991 is £118 million.

The gross number of jobs created in IDA assisted companies in 1990 was 18,000 approximately. Together with jobs created in SFADCo and Údarás assisted companies a total of 21,500 gross jobs were created in 1990. Under the Programme for Economic and Social Progress the objective is to create 20,000 new jobs in the manufacturing and international services sectors in each year of the programme i.e. 1991, 1992, 1993.

The 1989 IDA annual report (the latest report available) shows that the overall average cost per job created and sustained in the period 1983-1989 was £15,564 (1989 prices).
