Vol. 407 No. 8

Written Answers. - Independent Prisons Board.

Seán Barrett

Question:

36 Mr. S. Barrett asked the Minister for Justice the plans he has to introduce an independent prisons board, as outlined in the Whitaker report; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The recommendation in the report for the establishment of a prisons board has very wide ranging implications and it is not at all clear that the balance of public interest lies with the establishment of such a body. The matter is still under review and any proposals which may emerge from the review will be announced in the usual way.
