Vol. 408 No. 5

Written Answers. - Primary Schools Free Milk Scheme.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

61 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the established link between nutrition and education attainment, she will consider introducing, on a universal basis, a free milk scheme for primary schools.

At present local authorities in conjunction with the Department of Social Welfare and the approval of my Department provide meals for certain schools. This scheme is administered by the local authorities.

There is also a scheme which allows milk to be provided to pupils in schools at low cost. This scheme is subsidised by the EC.
