104 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for the Environment if he will consider the establishment of a statutory body with overall responsibility for the provision of hostel accommodation for homeless persons; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Local authorities have adequate powers to provide hostel accommodation for homeless persons and to assist approved voluntary bodies to provide such accommodation. I do not consider that the establishment of a separate statutory body for this purpose would be appropriate.
