Vol. 411 No. 1

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

Frank Crowley

Question:

645 Mr. Crowley asked the Minister for Education when she intends to provide free depreciation on the machinery of agricultural contractors for higher education grant purposes.

For a candidate to be eligible for the award of a higher education grant, the reckonable income of the candidate and of the candidate's parents or guardians must be within the income limits set out in the relevant scheme.

Arising from proposals which are contained in theProgramme for Economic and Social Progress, the higher education grants scheme is being examined with a view to, inter alia, developing more equitable income assessment criteria for all applicants. Pending the outcome of this examination I have no plans at present to alter the income assessment criteria for the determination of grant eligibility in the case of self-employed persons.
