Vol. 411 No. 2

Written Answers. - Extension to Maynooth School.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

73 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the need for the provision of five further permanent classrooms at Maynooth post-primary school, County Kildare; if she expects to make financial provision for such an extension in the 1992 Estimates; when she expects the various development stages in such a project to be processed; if she is conscious of the need for the provision of outdoor recreational facilities adjacent to this large school; whether she expects to be in a position to provide for any such facilities, now or in 1992; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 63 of 15 May 1991.

No application for a specific number of classrooms at Maynooth post-primary school has been received in my Department recently. The school has a capacity of 625 pupil places and the current enrolment is 635 pupils. My Department would be prepared to give careful consideration to any application for the provision of extra accommodation to meet the short term needs of the school if required.

In the present circumstances the limited funds available for second level school buildings are being devoted to the provision of urgently needed classroom accommodation. It will be appreciated, therefore, that funding is not available at present for the provision of additional outdoor recreational facilities.
