Vol. 411 No. 2

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Appointments.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

76 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education the number of requests from the various primary schools in County Kildare for the appointment of a remedial teacher; the number of such appointments that have been filled in the past four years; the number she expects to fill in the remainder of the current year or in 1992; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

A total of 40 primary schools in County Kildare have sought the services of a remedial teacher.

In the last four years, 13 of these schools have been allocated a remedial teaching service. This includes 11 schools which benefited, either individually or on a shared basis, from the allocation of 80 new remedial posts to the primary sector in the current year. In the period 1983-87 the number of remedial teachers appointed in County Kildare was five.

The matter of the further allocation of remedial teachers in 1992 will be kept under review.
