Vol. 411 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cavan Swimming Pool.

Andrew Boylan

Question:

31 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for the Environment whether further to (1) his reply to Parliamentary Question No. 25 of 7th May, 1991 and (2) his announcement later at a press conference in Hotel Kilmore in Cavan approving the building of Cavan swimming pool, he has now made the allocation for its development; if the pool will be funded on its original plans; and when he will notify Cavan County Council in relation to its funding.

My Department wrote to Cavan County Council on 9 August 1991 conveying approval in principle to the council's proposals for the Cavan swimming pool as set out in their submission of August 1989. It is now a matter for the county council to prepare contract documents and submit them to my Department for approval, prior to proceeding to the tendering stage.

A capital grant will be made available to meet 80 per cent of the cost of providing a pool to the standards set out in my Department's guideline specification for swimming pool construction. The balance of the costs must be financed by way of local contribution. Work carried out to a standard higher than provided for in my Department's specification, including the provision of additional facilities such as those proposed for the Cavan pool, a kiddies' pool, a coffee dock, a gym and fitness room, a solarium and steam room and a creche are not eligible for grant.

Having regard to the limited funds available for the swimming pool programme generally and the competing demands from other local authorities for those funds, the commitment of funds as outlined above is the maximum which can be made for this project. The actual amount of the capital grant for the project will be determined at tender stage.
