Vol. 411 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Apprentices Pay.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

8 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for Defence if he has satisfied himself that existing levels of pay for Army apprentices are adequate; if he has any plans to review the levels; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The rates of pay of apprentices in the Permanent Defence Force were reviewed by the Gleeson Commission and increases were recommended. These have been fully implemented. Pay rates for apprentices have attracted the further increase provided for under the terms of the Programme for Economic and Social Progress.

The Gleeson Commission highlighted the unsatisfactory conditions in which apprentices live in the Devoy Barracks in Naas, will the Minister confirm whether the recommendations in this area were acted upon?

If the Deputy puts down a separate question I will deal with it. I will communicate directly with the Deputy on that situation.

Is the Minister satisfied that the rates of pay applying to Army apprentices are comparable with the CIF rates for apprentices in the construction industry?

Yes, I am satisfied with the rates.
