Vol. 411 No. 8

Written Answers. - Collins Barracks, Cork.

Gerry O'Sullivan

Question:

30 Mr. G. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Defence if he will outline (1) whether he has visited Collins Barracks, Cork, (2) whether he has examined the Barracks and seen the desirability for a new gymnasium and (3) the amount that would be required to provide this facility; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Madeleine Taylor-Quinn

Question:

50 Mrs. Taylor-Quinn asked the Minister for Defence if he plans to provide more gymnasium and recreational facilities in Army barracks throughout the country as part of the physical fitness campaign within the Army.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 30 and 50 together.

I am aware of the necessity for a new gymnasium at Collins Barracks, Cork. The estimated cost of such a gymnasium would be £750,000. I hope to visit the barracks in the near future.

I appreciate the importance of recreational facilities in Army barracks generally throughout the State and in this regard I am exploring ways of obtaining special funding for the construction of such facilities within the Defence Forces.
