Vol. 411 No. 8

Written Answers. - Speed Reducing Devices.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

93 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline his views on the placing of rumble strips on public roads; and whether they could have a substantial effect in slowing traffic in (1) housing estates and (2) at danger points on roads.

I have authorised the experimental use of a number of speed reducing devices, including rumble strips, at various locations around the country. The environmental research unit and the relevant local authorities are monitoring the effectivness of these devices and a report on their value will be submitted to me in due course. If it is established that the devices might be effective in securing a reduction in traffic speed, I will make the necessary amending regulations to permit their use.
