Vol. 412 No. 1

Written Answers. - Illegal Radio Stations.

Austin Currie

Question:

174 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if he will list the illegal radio stations currently in operation; the way in which this compares with the position 12 months ago; the number of prosecutions pending; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Because of the illegal nature of pirate radio stations we are not always aware of their establishment or changes in name. My Department believes that there are three pirate radio stations in Donegal, three in Monaghan and two in the Dublin area.

The situation 12 months ago would have been similar except that a station in Kerry was closed and a pirate station in Dublin started up. All illegal operators are liable to have action taken against them at any time. Prosecutions are pending against five persons in Donegal and one in Dublin.
