Vol. 412 No. 7

Written Answers. - Jobs Target.

Peter Barry

Question:

60 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if indications from a recent survey that shows a fall in demand for executives can be confirmed by information available in his Department; and if this trend will have implications for attaining the jobs target in the Programme for Economic and Social Progress.

I am not in a position to confirm the indications from the survey which the Deputy maintains shows a fall in demand for executives. Furthermore, I cannot comment on the direct relationship between trends in the recruitment of executives and overall industrial job creation.

However, I am satisfied that the current economic and industrial policies being pursued by the Goverment and set out in the Programme for Government are the correct ones to follow. They will ensure that the Irish economy will remain very well placed to take advantage of any upswing in the world economy, and will effectively tackle the unemployment situation through sustained economic growth.
