Vol. 413 No. 5

Written Answers. - Irradiated Foods.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

152 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Health if she will give details of the irradiated foods which are now being sold commercially in Ireland; the dates on which they came on the market; and whether (1) there are any listed to be included in the near future and (2) foods, which are irradiated, are accordingly marked.

As existing legislation does not refer specifically to irradiation of food, the details requested by the Deputy are not available. However, our legislation does require that all foods offered for sale must be of the nature, quality and substance demanded by the consumer and must be fit for human consumption. As the Deputy may be aware, the European Commission has formally proposed a directive regarding the irradiation of foods and these proposals are currently under consideration by the member states.
