Vol. 414 No. 4

Written Answers. - Clonmel (Tipperary) Centre.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

214 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Health if she will provide urgent funding for the establishment of a residential and activation centre for severely mentally handicapped young people in Clonmel, County Tipperary, where a premises has been acquired but cannot open due to a lack of funding; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I understand that the centre to which the Deputy refers has been acquired by the County Tipperary Association for Mental Handicapped Children.

In each health board area plans are being prepared which quantify and prior itise the development needs of the mental handicap services. The South Eastern Health Board recently completed a review of these services and prepared a policy document concerning the development of services over the next five years.

The health board are having discussions with the association regarding this new development. If this project is identified as a priority in the south eastern region I would be happy to have it considered for funding in 1992, having regard to the funds made available to me and the competing priorities to be met.
