Vol. 414 No. 5

Written Answers. - Loughmore Castle, County Tipperary.

Michael Lowry

Question:

55 Mr. Lowry asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline his views on whether the Commissioners of Public Works should have Loughmore Castle in County Tipperary vested in them in view of the fact that Loughmore Castle consists of a late 15 century tower house and is considered a fine example of this type of architecture which should be preserved.

This important monument is protected by a preservation order under the National Monuments Acts since 1938. The question of taking it into State care was examined some years ago but there were some title difficulties encountered at that time. I propose to have negotiations with the owners resumed with a view to seeing if these difficulties have been overcome.
