Vol. 416 No. 2

Written Answers. - Secondhand Car Imports.

Bernard Allen

Question:

66 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the steps he has taken to limit the import of secondhand Japanese cars into Ireland; and whether he has made an assessment of the import of those cars on the car market in Ireland.

I have not taken any steps to limit the importation of secondhand Japanese cars. As all cars used in Ireland are imported, the question of limiting imports from any particular source does not arise. In any event, Ireland's international trading obligations under GATT and EC preclude the unilateral introduction of restrictions on imports from any source.

I am advised that imports of used Japanese cars account for about 2.5 per cent of the secondhand car market in Ireland.
