Vol. 416 No. 2

Written Answers. - Reopening of Inishbiggle (Mayo) School.

Enda Kenny

Question:

120 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Education if he will re-open Inishbiggle national school, Inishbiggle Island, County Mayo in view of the attendance there at present; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Inishbiggle national school closed in June 1990; in its final year, the school had two pupils on roll who were, at that time, the last children of primary school-going age on the land.

In September 1991, my Department received a request to re-open the school as a family with two children of school-going age had returned to the island.

My Department considers that reopening the school for such a small number of children is not justifiable and the parents have been so informed.

My Department are now considering an application from the parents for a grant towards the cost of providing private transport to a school in Achill.
