Vol. 416 No. 4

Written Answers. - Mayo Island Helipad Facilities.

Enda Kenny

Question:

74 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Marine if he will provide assistance to supplement voluntary aid and contributions to Innisturk Island, County Mayo, for the provision of a proper helipad for air and sea rescue purposes for the island.

The Review Group on Air Sea Rescue Service was established in February 1989 to examine the structure and operation of the air/sea rescue services and to make recommendations to ensure a cost-effective and efficient service to meet national and international requirements.

Included in the recommendations contained in the first interim report of the review group, and accepted by Government, was the upgrading of the Commissioners of Irish Lights' helipad at Blacksod, County Mayo. This helipad was commissioned on 15 January this year.

The monitoring of air/sea rescue service facilities is ongoing in my Department. The provision of further helipads around our coast will form part of this ongoing assessment.
