Vol. 416 No. 4

Written Answers. - New Dublin Post-Primary School.

Seán Ryan

Question:

79 Mr. Ryan asked the Minister for Education if he will outline the position regarding the need for a new post-primary school in Castleknock, Dublin 15, particularly in the light of the statement dated 10 February 1992 by his predecessor regarding this matter; if he will further outline where the students from the Castleknock area are to be enrolled at present; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Austin Currie

Question:

84 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Education if, in relation to a school (details supplied) in Dublin 15, he will outline, (1) the current plans for the future of the site, (2) the price paid for the site by his Department and (3) the estimated current value of the site; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose taking Questions Nos. 79 and 84 together.

Consultants were recently commissioned to assist the Department in a study to determine the need and provision for post-primary school places in the Castleknock/Hartstown/Huntstown/Dunboyne areas.

The findings of the study indicate that there is an immediate need for a new post-primary school in Hartstown, to be followed by a new school in Dunboyne. The findings also indicate that the needs of the Castleknock pupils can continue to be met by the post-primary schools that currently cater for the majority of them. These schools are: St. Dominic's Secondary School, Navan Road; St. Declan's C.B.S., Navan Road; Coolmine Community School; St. Joseph's Secondary School, Mount Sackville (fee-paying); St. Vincent's College, Castleknock (fee-paying).
The need for the retention of the Castleknock site is being kept under review. It would not be appropriate to reveal the purchase price of the site as it involved a transaction with a private individual. A current valuation of the site is not available.
