Vol. 416 No. 4

Written Answers. - Third Level Irish Entry Qualification.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

78 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education the action he intends taking in relation to students who sat Gaeilge Chumarsáideach at the Intermediate Certificate and are now taking Senior Certificate Irish at Leaving Certificate, bearing in mind that the NUI is not prepared to recognise their course for entry into NUI colleges; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The question of the entry requirements for university courses is a matter for the university authorities themselves.

The Senior Certificate was developed as an alternative pathway to certification for pupils who do not wish to pursue the Leaving Certificate course. It provides a course of study designed primarily for transition from school to working life and not for those pupils who wish to proceed to university education.
