Vol. 416 No. 4

Written Answers. - Judith Ward Case.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

104 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the efforts which he has made regarding the Judith Ward case; and if he will outline the action, if any, his Department have carried out over the years.

I have taken a particular interest in cases of this kind, and as Minister I remain concerned to ensure that instances of alleged miscarriage of justice are fully investigated.

As the Deputy may be aware, Judith Ward's appeal is now expected to commence on 27 April. While our standing in relation to her case is somewhat limited as she is a British citizen, our Embassy in London have kept a close watching brief and have maintained informal contact with the Home Office on the matter. I am encouraged that a date, albeit indicative at this stage, has been set for the appeal, and I look forward to a speedy and just resolution of the case.
