Vol. 416 No. 6

Written Answers. - Language Test for Doctors.

Bernard Allen

Question:

288 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if he will make a statement on a recent report (details supplied) that the Eastern Health Board are proposing a language proficiency test prior to registration for doctors to the Medical Council.

I have under consideration at present proposals from the Medical Council for amendments to the Medical Practitioners Act, 1978.

As part of the consultative process required in such circumstances, a wide range of bodies were asked to submit proposals in order that a comprehensive set of amendments could be prepared.

The proposal referred to by the Deputy is one of a number of proposals submitted by the Eastern Health Board. This proposal, together with the many other proposals submitted are still being examined in my Department.
