Written Answers. - Formal Links with South Africa.

Peter Barry

Question:

355 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if Ireland is the only European Community country without formal links with South Africa; if he considers that the establishment of such links would be helpful in encouraging the South African Government to end apartheid speedily; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Ireland is the only European Community country which does not have diplomatic relations with South Africa. We are continuing to monitor developments there closely and the question of whether the opening of diplomatic relations might help to encourage the speedy ending of apartheid will be kept under review.
