Vol. 417 No. 2

Written Answers. - Bord na Móna Labour Force.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

95 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Energy the strength of the Bord na Móna labour force in each of the past five years; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The figures requested by the Deputy are as follows:

Year

Peak Employment

Average Employment

1986-87

6,146

4,687

1987-88

5,959

4,795

1988-89

5,116

3,835

1989-90

3,966

3,152

1990-91

3,259

2,673

The decline in numbers is as a result of a major voluntary redundancy programme aimed at reducing operating costs to enable Bord na Móna to turn productivity gains into better margins and hence contribute to their debt reduction.
