Written Answers. - AIDS Statistics.

Bernard Allen

Question:

126 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if he will provide the numbers who contracted AIDS in this country in 1989, 1990 and 1991, and to 1 February 1992; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Bernard Allen

Question:

128 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health the number of people who have died from AIDS in this country up to 1 February 1992.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 126 and 128 together.

There were 97 reported deaths from AIDS in this country up to 1 February 1992.

The number of cases of AIDS reported in this country are as follows: 1989, 51; 1990, 61; 1991, 70; January 1992, 2.

I am concerned that the number of reported cases of AIDS in this country is continuing to rise. The national AIDS Strategy Committee, established at the end of last year, is considering the various issues affecting the spread of HIV-AIDS and other matters at present.

The committee have appointed four sub-committees to examine: surveillance-epidemiology, care and management, prevention and anti-discrimination.

The sub-committees will be making an interim report to the national committee early in April following which I would hope to announce a number of short term developments.
