Vol. 417 No. 5

Written Answers. - Irish Sugar-Greencore Staffing.

Dick Spring

Question:

309 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will outline the number of jobs at Irish Sugar-Greencore which have been increased-decreased both prior to and since its privatisation; and the levels at which these changes have taken place.

The number of permanent employees in Irish Sugar prior to privatisation i.e. as at 1 March 1991 was 1,636. Since privatisation, Greencore plc is of course no longer a State-sponsored body under the aegis of my Department. However, in Greencore's 1991 Annual Report for year ended 30 September 1991, the average annual employment in the group for 1990-91 was given as 1,874. I understand that the current level of employment is about 2,000.

I do not have a breakdown of the levels at which changes in employment figures have taken place.
